There is no better time in the UK than the Spring as the evenings draw out, the weather picks up and the garden starts to bloom. With the thrill and excitement of Cheltenham behind us, attention turns to the start of the Flat and the first 2yo races of the season. By mid April we are back on the Rowley Mile for the Craven meeting and the calendar for many a bloodstock enthusiast is filled with Racing and breeze-up sale dates. This is a great time to be selling a horse in training with ‘potential’.
April and May often sees the Hong Kong market spring into life especially for those lightly raced 3yo’s with potential. The Hong Kong market is interested in colts often with size and scope and a great temperament. Many Hong Kong buyers will want a horse 15.3hh minimum and weighing upwards of 500kgs that must have only run a handful of times. The remit is tight and the vetting restrictions are even tighter but if you tick the boxes you often get well rewarded.
This time of year is also busy for buyers Worldwide looking towards Royal Ascot and trying to get into that sacred Winners enclosure. I was lucky enough to get there when The Wow Signal won the Coventry Stakes Gr.2. I had purchased him for Al Shaqab racing after he won on debut – to this day that was my greatest thrill in the Bloodstock World.
Royal Ascot is not just about 2-year-olds though and 2021 will see the extended race programme that we saw in 2020, so there will be many opportunities for selling and buying horses for the Royal meeting.
The USA market is fairly constant throughout the Spring and Summer and our 2 and 3yo fillies make great appeal. In general, the USA buyers are looking for fast ground fillies who will go 8-10f and those with black-type and/or good pedigrees will be attractive.
The Australian market continues to thrive with preference for the mile plus performers and we see plenty of interest for our high 80s plus, 3yo performers who will go 8f (1600m) and beyond. Clearly the ultimate goal is the Caulfield or Melbourne Cup horse and Wesellbloodstock.com will certainly be trying to target, and list, a future winner.
The European broodmare market will be strong from May through until December and Wesellbloodstock.com will look to pro-actively sell fillies and mares to the Global marketplace. Good race records and good pedigrees are wanted Worldwide and we will be delighted to list, and sell, your mares.
Summer is just around the corner and it’s going to be an exciting year ahead.
